Wharepuke means ‘house on the hill’ in Maori. The property has been in the Booth family since 1938. Robin Booth began developing the Wharepuke Subtropical Garden, which sits in a valley running down to the historic Stone Store, in 1993. It is now a “Garden of National Significance” NZGT.

In 2003 Robin’s daughter Tania and her partner Mark Graver RE moved onto the property and began setting up the accommodation and art businesses. Tania now manages the cottage accommodation. Mark, a practising professional artist and award-winning printmaker, runs the art gallery and the non-toxic printmaking studio. Together they look after the 1 km sculpture trail that loops through the 2 hectares of exotic subtropical garden. To complement your experience we have our on-site restaurant MĀHA run by award-winning chef owner Ming Poon and his partner Dianne Langman.

Experience the award winning subtropical garden, the art gallery and sculpture park. Visit the non-toxic printmaking studio. Come along to an artist’s talk or get a group of friends together and arrange a printmaking workshop, art holiday or activity weekend away. Workshops in acrylic resist etching can be tailor made to suit. No previous printmaking experience necessary.
